also what tools do you need?
i know stuff like skimming you need a mill which is strangly one of the few things i don't own ( ) but what tools would you average home DIY mini man need for rebilding a head?

If you want to do modifying work, like chamber work, porting, etc you'll need an air compressor (with about 5cfm or more) and die grinder, a dremel just won't be up to the job.

i believe the valve seats have to be accurately machined then the inserts are cooled and pressed in so they wont come out!! not such an easy diy job!! probably cheaper in the long run to have the valve guides fitted and have unleaded seats fitted by pros and re-assemble the rest yourself!! if you want to learn you could always ask the engineering company if they would let you watch the mods being done!!

You don't specifically need a compressor and a die grinder. A cheaper option is to use a cheap pillar drill, you can get them for around £30, with a flexi about £7 and some burrs or stones.
edit: Fikus beat me to the valve seats bit..
