Hi guys, I just signed up as I’ve been working on my 1983 Austin Mayfair for a while now, I felt like it was getting close to the end but now; when I turn the key, the engine simply clicks and for some reason, the pipe coming from the clutch resivoir instantly becomes red hot.

There is an earth cable from the engine block to the bracket that the clutch pipe runs through. My only guess is that the starter has stopped and there is feedback running up the earth?

Any help will be amazing as this has really demotivated me.

Move the earth cable to a solid body point. It's trying to ground through the clutch hydraulic pipes/Master cylinder.

Bad earth to the engine, choke/accelerator cables can also become hot when this happens.

Or more to the point, your clutch line has become an earth. get it mounted from the body to the engine before trying to start it again. I have one from the front of the engine to the front panel as an additional earth.

yep, earths nackered, probably best to renew the earth strap while your at it,

also check your throttle and choke cables as these maywell have got hot too, alnd youll want to bleed the clutch and pump some fluid through where its been cooked.

I gotta say, that's a new one for me (we didn't get Verto Clutches here), it's usually the choke or throttle cables.

i am with you on this as i am struggling to see why the clutch pipe is getting hot as the earth should be should be taken by another route.

would love to see pics of this.

mm if it is a braided full length hose then i could see it. with an earth that is just not working.

The earth strap should be a decent heavy braided type running from a bolt just below the starter on the flywheel housing

to the 5/16th UNF captive nut on the inner wing...make sure it connects to bare metal, and if it still glows red you are in trouble

A friend of mine rebuilt a mini and "earthed" the engine to the front subframe, the brake pipe than became the earth path and got very hot. When we got it fixed and running we found we had no brakes. When we were trying to start the car we had heard a "POOF", reckon the fluid had exploded and took out the master cylinder and caliper seals.

I have no idea how to send a pic on this forum lol.
I have put the new strap on and routed it elsewhere.
Is it normal for the strap to heat up at all?
