I have managed to lay my hands on an old MG Metro rocker cover which is manky and tarnished. I am going to strip the lacquer off of it and polish it. However I want a really bright finish from the alloy. Has anyone got any top tips for getting the "bright effect" from alloy. Also what polishing products work best?

Cheers
Barry

Solvol Autosol is good for things needing polished up but they have to hbe reasonably shiny in the first place so it probably wont help with your situation but will help once its been done. Cant help you with the actuall mirror shine. Sorry!

for twenty squid i think...machine mart do a polishing kit...consists of 2 mops which attatch to your drill and a polishing compound...got my manky rocker cover nice and shiny...also useful for heavy duty polishing...have used it on both alloy and steel wheels to great effect

To polish things I usually start with a coarse wet and dry taking the top layer off giving you some fresh metal to work with. The I slowly go down grades to take the scratch lines out produced by the previous grade paper. Eventually working to around 1200 or 1500 grit. After using this wet I then go onto the Autosol or similar metal polish. It works a treat but will probably take you the whole day to do.

yup, the wet and dry method is very effective, then for polishing i used brasso, and then autosol chrome polish,

brasso is moree abrasive and so it continues the whole 'start rough and get finer with grades' process.

Ive been doing mine at work,

i shot blast it first, then some rough emery to get all the marks and dints out then finer emery to shine it up abit, i havent reached the fins yet which im dreading but may use a dremel or something similar. i tryed using a buffing wheel on a pedastal grinder and it bought it up realy well on a small patch, havent tried the autosoll yet but im sure it'll bring it up like a mirror. :ermm: bling bling
