I think, that it does give you rather small inlet valves, but it overcomes the interference and make the exhaust manifold simpler.

I haven't got enough Meccano to also duplicate a camshaft and valve train,  but what would happen if we drove the cam in reverse with a pair of gear wheels?

The two up, two down crank referred to by Mini13 and Retroman was done by Simon Gardener in Melbourne.

From what I recall of it, it was rough running while one solution being to fit balance shafts or possibly a dual mass flywheel.

Grumpy knows more about it, next time I see him, I'll ask. If I recall, while DV was aware of it, he didn't follow up on it.

I'll need to sketch the arrangements out again, but if I recall from when I last looked at this (close on ten years ago!) I don't think you can get away from Port Robbing on these engines with the 5 Port Heads. I was only having a chat to AKat last night about this. He might be along at some point to through his 2 cents worth in.

the 1&2 up 3&4 down crank has been done before, I remember vizard mentioning it somwhere, but didnt say how good or crap it was, IIRC it was an inline motor built for a sprite in Aus.

I have seen a photo of this engine that a mate had on his phone. It is something that we have been toying with for some time. I think there may be a few of these, I heard of another one here in Aus in a Mini and one in America. The aussie one has been referred to as 'the shaker motor'!!!
Balancing would be an issue from our discussions, but I think the idea has possibilities. We looked in to the cross plane like the Yamaha R1 but they battled for many years to get that right and balance shafts would be required for that.
