Question About Fitting Facet Electric Fuel Pump

Hi guys, two questions related to fitting a "solid state" type facet pump:

 

1) is it okay to fit the pump in the engine bay rather than at the rear subframe like most people? (Pulling rather than pushing operation). Most pumps shouldnt mind pushing or pulling.

 

2) Would any type of inertial cut off switch work for these? Like these cheapy generic ones from ebay: https://www.ebay.com...&frcectupt=true

also has anyone ever had any problems like going over a pothole or a hump at speed and causing the fuel pump to cut out? due to the inertial switch.

1) nope, fit it as stated in the instructions. so in the rear and no more than X above the tank.  (or find a pump that can pull fuel)

2) cant comment.

I use a inertia cut off switch from a production car. Fit it on the feed for the pump. In the event off a crash it'll cut the power to the pump and fuel won't to continue to poor over the road

I once ran over a medium sized dog which was already dead whilst doing 65 mph ish in an spi.  It tripped the switch but I was able to reset it after pulling over.  The dog remained dead.

A Facet pump should be fitted to 'push' the petrol rather than to 'suck' it. So fit at the rear under the rear seat base panel.
I don't have an inertia switch because my Minis are normally rally cars and an inertia switch on a rally car is pretty useless!
In fact I always fit twin Facet pumps in parallel with separate switching and fusing for total reliability.

Yes as you only need 3psi at the carb

I purchased a second hand inertial cut off switch from eBay from a Honda CRV for £6 including the plug and a few inches of cable.

It looks very much like your picture. Its a simple form of shock switch which can easily be reset by pushing the button on the top which resets the ball inside and restores contact. I would definitely always use one on a road car, when using an electric pump.

My Facet pump is fitted to the rear subframe nearside lower web, akin to where the old SU pump would have fitted. There is a “course” filter between the tank outlet and the pump inlet to catch any detritus coming out of the tank! This type of pump is gravity fed and should be used to “push” the fuel along the line underneath the car.

I bought a fuel cut-off inertia switch for a land rover freelander (I believe this was the same switch fitted to the later injection Minis) and this is wired in series with the ignition fed electrical supply.

Up front under the bonnet I have a “filter king” filter and pressure regulator assembly set to 3psi and this is sufficient to feed a pair of 11/4” SU’s. The filter unit contains a fine filter to prevent crud from entering the float chambers. At the risk of tempting fate, this installation has been running perfectly for 5 years now........!

I realise the pump is supposed to be mounted down low at the rear of the car but because the car has done 20000 km since including a 9000 km road trip with no problems I've left the pump where it is. I run a 45 Weber without a fuel pressure regulator with no problems. I understood the facet pump puts out approx 3 psi?

again it all depends on which pump it is.

I have run a rear mounted facet pump in my Mini for the last 6 years without a pressure regulator valve feeding 2 HIF 38 carbs, no probs whatsoever.

If it trips Ill pull over quick as Ill probably mistake it for oil light :)

In that case, it might be better if you connected it to the horn.
