just look down!! by selector box i mean the place the lever that u pictured came from!! shud be a nice square edged pin!!

The pin is nice and square in the selector box. The gear lever moves smoothly between 3 and fourth but to get into 1 from neutral is very stiff. It is almost completely solid when moving it sideways to get into 1st and only moves after severely wiggling the lever around.
why would this be?

Just to let you know i've ordered a new gear lever and gear linkage from a breakers yard so hopefully that will sort the problem out. can anyone explain the problem i've bin having with going from neutral to first?

its sounding like something possibly wrong with a bush siezing on the selector shaft in the diff housing !! or maybe the ball and spring that hides behind the o/s drive seal plate!! and the fact that the lever has worn because of it!!

would it be likely for that to have happened? or could it just be that the lever is worn and needs replacing?

without feeling it for myself i cant say! it does happen to minis tho!!

if its hard to move the lever to the sides and stiff to go forwards and back it be looking at the ball in the diff housng!!

its not stiff at all forward and back its just sideways where the problem lies

hmm, disconnect the rod change unit from the box(put it in reverse and knock out the roll pin in the selector shaft)

if its still stiff once the gearbox is dosconnected then id say remote unit!! of it moves free and easy then its gearbox related!! but still not awefull to do, just not easy!!

ok if u look under the car, next to the exhaust there ill be 2 rods going from the gear selector box to the gearbox, the top one is only a steady bar and wont be the cause!!

the lower rod is the one that goes into the gearbox, it rotates and goes foward and back to select the gears!!

it is joined to the gearbox right by the diff housing on the back of the engine by 2 roll pins and an over sleve (bad description but u'll know what i mean when u look) it gives similar effect as a universal joint!!

with the gearbox in reverse you should be able to knock out the roll pin out at the gearbox end thus removing the selector shaft from the gearbox allowing you to isolate the problem!!

does this help!!

once u get the car up on ramps and have a look you'll probably see what i mean

update:

I've had the mini up on the ramps lastnight and i have fitted a new selector box and gear lever. I'm still having trouble though, i can't get it to go into reverse at all, it is just solid when trying to move it sideways into reverse. I can now get 3rd smoothly but when you select 4th it will go into 4th smoothly, but then when you let go of the gear lever it moves over into 2nd, as if theres nothing stopping it from moving over to the left when in 4th.

These two problems happen regardless of wether the engine running or not.

I can't work out why this would happen like this. Has anyone got any idea why it would?
