Personally I prefer the scissor type.

Take it you never had an issue breaking one? This one took some hammer but as you see split itself not the ball joint   :shy:

The hammer-in type are in my mind too brutal. I had one years ago, used it a couple of times and it's never been out of my toolbox since! By contrast the scissor type will usually split the joint even when the cup part isn't fully inserted around the joint.

I've never broken a fork type but I suppose on a tight fitting you're spreading the forks as you hit it.

I prefer the scissor type now.  I was sceptical of them until I tried one and it works really well.

Beware that the body of some scissor ones is too thick to go between the arm and the dome of the ball-joint, and a substantial grindstone is required to thin them down.

Mine is one of the old school type from 35 years ago, and still going strong, it is the fork type, and I have never had any issues.

What I will say is that if I did come across a too tight to move offender, I would use a bit of heat at the top taper with a blow torch, couple of slaps, off it come

Bingo !!!

I have a 'Club' brand Scissor one, that must be 35 years old. It does look - in may ways - like Nicks ^. This does them probably 90% of the time, but I also have a Fork type that's all steel (not cast) that I use when the Scissor one doesn't do the job.

I have found that if the scissor-type doesn't undo it without too much torque being applied to the bolt, tighten it up and then hit the ball joint with a hammer and that normally gets it to break out OK.

My scissor type splitter is similar to the one shown, but I have a couple of fork-type which I tend not to use on Minis.
