Mine just had bolts straight into the head but I think the other type would be better?

As someone else has said, this package is labeled "1/4" UNC " and is a size too small.
A word of warning:- Drilling the aluminium thermostat housing is not easy, as even with the housing held in a vice on a pillar drill, the drill will "bite" and not run true down the center of the hole. As an engineer, I would enlarge the hole with a tapered 3/8th" reamer.
However, if you are going to try and fix the head yourself, you need a set of three 3/8th" UNC taps and a tap holder, for repairing your thermostat mounting.
If the thread has been stripped, you won't need to drill the head as the drill size for a 3/8th" thread is 5/16th", so the number one/taper tap will go down the stripped hole.
Watch some U tube videos of how to use a set of taps before you start'.
If only one stud is stripped, just repair that one.

That's unf, the number after the fraction is the pitch. 1/4-28 is nominally 1/4 inch diameter with 28 turns per inch.
I'm not being a pedant - UN is chiefly American and that's how they refer to it rather than UNF or UNC.
You'd probably get away with just "gluing" a replacement in. Thread lock is a good idea anyway if the hole bottoms in the water jacket.

still 5/16 UNC
some words about changing the thread size. this will mean nothing will fit as standard. so you will need to drill out the thermostat housing.
also depending on which thread has gone, and the head, it may not take a larger thread.

I think I’ll get a set of the studs as mine we’re just bolts (could be possible that the previous owner had put any ol’ Bolts in? Causing it to not teeth in properly).
I’m going to try it without touching the housing (that was just my inpatient ‘get it done’ head talking).
Once it all arrives, I’ll let you know how I got on. Hopefully I’ll have a positive message!!

bolts were standard on Metros and other cars. and maybe some of the Minis with the sandwich block.

Expect studs were used so you can remove the radiator bracket without disturbing the gasket
