John, I'm sure you will have this covered already, but if you lift up the pistons about half inch are both falling all the way back down with the nice clunk when they touch the bridge?

Yes I've centred them (fixed needles) and they fall nicely

John, your breather set-up is a lot more forgiving than the PCV. But try disconnecting, and plug off where it goes into the carbs.

 

If this does not help do you know what diameter the inlet ports were taken out to when head was modified? (Just in case it has broken into one of the pushrod holes)

 

Then back onto the fuel delivery side.

The diameter of the ports is 35mm at the head face - I imagine there should be leeway to go bigger?  - I will try blocking the breather tubes - I've tried everything else!
