So I fitted a new wheel bearing last year and fitted a new taper washer from minispares at the same time.i replaced the CV joint this morning and found this when I got the hubnut off.

I did torque it to 190foot pounds (single hole CV with 8.4" disks) and used a flat washer to preload the bearings before hand.

What would cause this and is it something I did (so I do not make the same mistake again) or is it a duff part?Attached File  IMG_20190601_090349-1824x1368.jpg   89.95K   6 downloads

That is a cast metal,  not a machined metal part. If you look, there is no signature to the metal

I have some correct metal machined, old stock,  not cheap imported item rings plus used and are all fine.

Some of these are made from Sintered metals and some from Bar stock.

As Richmond said ^

Also, it looks like the drive flange is pretty worn.

How would I tell if it is worn? It looks fine no pitting or anything.

If I put a new drive flange on it would I remove the hub again or would it be remove the hub nut un bolt the drive flange and then reverse of that?

If the bush is just cut in one place, it has to distort to work, and obviously this cast ones has distorted beyond its elastic limit.

Actually, it is doing its job better in two pieces than it did, unbroken.

I used to machine centralising bushes for military applications.

They had to be cut into 3 segments and gripped in a special collet to be bored and were held together by a wire spring in a groove.  Much too expensive for the motor industry, but the engineering way to do it.

You're not the first - I've had two go in succession.  I do think the quality probably isn't what it was on these (or most things to be fair).

I made that comment based on the first photo in the set you've posted up. There's quite a witness mark on the Washer.

The other thing that occurred to me to check is that it fits on the CV properly. If it's not fitting over the step just before the thread on the CV, it will want to twist the Collar and break it.

There's a bit more info here;-

I had the same thing happen to the tapered washer on my car, I replaced them with the machined ones from KAD.

I've not seen those before I don't really get how they work without the split though?
