it was the carb something to do with the float bowl and the flow of fuel. plenty of fuel to the carb but not getting too or past the needle. seems to be sorted now but not entirely sure what the problem was to be honest.

Oh actually apologies as this was some time ago. the float bowl overflow pipe was blocked which was stopping fuel getting in.
