On the Mini’s actual birthday I was reading that the total production figure was 5.3 million, I’m curious how many are actually left.
I guess this is hard to measure worldwide, especially as there will be many unregistered, fallen off databases etc, sitting unloved.
For the U.K. someone could plough through the “how many left” website and add them up?

Apparently the 'How Many Left' website does not always give very accurate figures for the many variants and make/model descriptions of the classic Mini over the years.

These were the DVLA figures for the Classic Mini below published back in 2010 in the November issue of Mini Magazine:-
63,592 Classic Minis still registered in UK on October 1st 2010
of which:
32,847 were taxed,
30,745 on SORN

(Wolseley Hornet and Riley Elf derivatives were not included, see below)

A 'Freedom of Information request' by an Elf/Hornet Register member back in 2010 revealed:-
"On the 22 August 2010, there were 327 Riley Elf vehicles with a current licence and 225
with a SORN. Also, there were 275 Wolseley Hornets with a current licence and 166 with
a SORN."

I believe the numbers of high value Minis like the Mk1/2/3 Cooper S have actually increased since, due to barn find restorations and some log book rebuilds.......the new Mk1 BMH bodyshell should also help boost the numbers of Mk1 Minis returning to the roads and into Historic motorsport.

The DVLA publishes detailed datasets of all UK licensed vehicles every year here:-

https://www.gov.uk/g...2-licensed-cars

Mini Production – How Many?

"Ian Nicholls of AROnline unravels the production data to try and come up with a definitive number of Minis built. He finds more questions than answers – but it looks like more than six million of all types were made.

In terms of sheer volume, the original Alec Issigonis-designed Mini is the most successful British car of all time, with an official figure of around 5.3 million being produced between 1959 and 2000. Most of these were produced by the Longbridge plant, which manufactured the Mini throughout the little car’s lifetime. However, even the official figures differ.

Chris Rees, in his book ‘Complete Classic Mini 1959-2000’, gives a figure of 5,378,776, supplied by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. Jon Pressnell, in his book ‘Mini – The Definitive History’, has a total of 5,387,862, as supplied by MG Rover. This is a difference of 9086. The difference between the two sets of figures appears to start in 1977......"

They changed it in Dec 2013 so you don't have to declare SORN every year after first declaration unless the ownership changes.

"The changes, which come into force from 16 December 2013, also mean that motorists will only need to tell DVLA once when they declare their vehicle off the road."

Thank you.

I have never liked to look into it, in case it stirred a hornets nest.

I am also not sure about vehicles like my old racing Mini that was road worthy to drive to local sprints etc:, but hasn't bee out for over 40 years.

If you are starting to count them all up, In our family we have 4 saloons, an Elf and a van in various states of repair from pristine to project, a saloon shell and a trailer made from the back half of a van. ?

If the vehicle was already untaxed and off road before the SORN rules came into force on 31st January 1998, then it does not need to be declared on SORN until after the next time you tax it and decide to go untaxed/off road again.

Happy birthday Mini!
"Happy birthday Mini! On 26th August 1959, motoring history was made. Exactly 60 years ago, the first Mini was launched to the public and its creator, Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis (above), stood proudly alongside to show the world his – and the British Motor Corporation‘s – answer to the bubble cars. As we all know, the way we looked at small cars, and what they were capable of, changed in that one single moment."
