Thanks guys, will get back to it tomorrow. Anyone know if there should be a ground attached to a bolt on the left side of the alternator? It looks like there should be but there isn't.

The alternator earths through the engine block.

How about taking the fan belt off so the alternator is isolated and do a (very) quick run. If the noise goes then there's the culprit.

I put an iPod in to the amp input, noise still present, so that rules or the head unit and the RCA cables. I can hear the noise on the speakers on the alternator when running, should it run silently? Too much tension on the belt?

Belt tension and alternator bearings are mechanical noise you hear at the engine . The next thing I would do is run the engine without the alternator connected to ensure the interference isn't coming from the ignition. If it is clear and you have already changed the amp I would look at replacing the alternator.

Ugh, I hope I don’t have to replace the alternator, it’s less than a year old and probably has only done a few hundred miles! I will run the engine without it and see how it sounds.

Finally figured out the problem with this, turns out it’s been the head unit all along. Put my original head unit in, no noise anywhere. So to fix it , it’s either a new wiring harness (old head unit has different socket which I plug in to am adapting harness to then plug in to the new one), or I will try and ground the RCA sockets on the back of the new head unit. Grounding the sockets won’t look pretty, but it’s only temporary until I get around to getting an Apple Car Play head unit.

Glad you're getting somewhere with it.

Fixed it at last. Turns out grounding the RCA sockets on the head unit was the answer.
