its a hard decision to make, the crown of the piston could have a hairline crack in it and if you stuck a fresh head on it could disintigrate and drop into the gearbox etc and do a lot more damage or do you remove the engine and fit a new piston, i know what i would do.

Well I've put the other head on my and it works. I had a really good look at the pistion and the worst bit is definetly the crown. It had deformed very slightly but I did what I could with a dremel and hoped for the best.
There's no smoking so that a good sign i guess. Seems to be going well so I'll have to see how it goes. I think I might rebuild the old cooper engine for a spare just in-case. Thanks for all your comments. I know the general opinion was that i should put a new piston in but I just dont really have the time now or the money and I getting a bit bored of taking the engine out. Thanks again.

You do realise if the piston lets go it could very well mean a new engine?

it should give a warning of impending failure really!!! about 1/4 of a second before it lets go you will hear a funny noise!! shortly followed by a bang and lots of mess all over the place as your piston exits by the first available place :S
