first build the front end assy. do you have the bolts yet? have you countersunk the front plate yet?

the end float is the distance the cam can move when the big sprocket is torqued up. you can pull it out zero and push it in and read the difference. or you can push it home and then pull it out and read the difference. it dont matter.

to check the cog are inline you need to pull the cog out. you also need the nut torqued down and the gasket and front plate fitted.

so i think you need to go a bit further yet. oh you dont need the key fitted yet. and it may need a tickle on a diamond board.

Ah I get it now, fit everything, then pull the cam upwards to the maximum point of it's end float and then check the gears are level. To torque  the Cam Nut down I may need to fit the old woodruff key.

I don't have a diamond board :-(

To torque the nut you can normally hold the cam sprocket with a screwdriver through one of the holes

I got a small credit card sized one off the bay of e's ....

But it's ok to use the old key as it's the in/out movement you need to check. Once you have tightened the cam nut it should be fine to measure the float.

Have you fitted a new triangular cam plate?
