I've mentioned this before but when I fitted a new bush and seal kit I packed the spaces with red rubber grease, the theory being the engine oil wouldn't readily mix with the grease, and hold it back a bit, and the seal would be kept well lubricated. Three years later not a drop of oil has been dripped. Whether this is down to my superior engineering skills, the grease or just plain lucky who knows.

Have them on all my minis (2 non running now) and both my brothers cars. Never had an issue. How good are the quick release ones ?
I kept taking my engine out on weekends and I got bored with tapping them out.
Its easy to fit them upside down if you don't pay attention, but other than that, no problem. ?

thanks for the reply.
Because they are a lose fit, does the gear-stick have more play in it ?

I don't remember them having much play, my brother drives his every day for the past 4-5 years since we fitted it, had the engine out twice (including a swap with his second mini) and never had an issue...thanks for the reply.

I guess there must be a tiny bit of 'play' as it's a bar instead of a spring clip. But not noticeable from the drivers perspective...

I founded another seal from VALTIN a high quality selector seal for mini from Somerford Mini shop ,I will use it and see
code is: JMSA017 £4.93 Inc VAT
http://www.somerford...oducts_id=16993
Also, this is a original seal from rover not as in the market from rimmerbro. £3.66 inc VAT
I used the original one, and would like to try the VALTIN seal and give you the result
there are a lot of seal with metal for American old cars and they are god with the same seal size
regards

Ive got one fitted, after my roll pin flew out and left me stranded! Also as others has said, much easier if taking engine in and out.
I don't notice any difference, it's expensive, but will last longer than the car I think!
thanks for the reply.

The seal genpop suggested is Nitrile rubber, & the somerford seal is also probably Nitrile rubber.
Does anybody know if the original seals were natural rubber? .... & if so who sells them?
Nitrile will be harder wearing but will not be as flexible as natural rubber so in an ideal world you would fit a Nitrile rubber seal on the outside & a natural rubber seal on the inside (possibly with red rubber grease as Panky suggested). I always fit 2 seals & have never leaked in public.
Also have you got the gear change rubber gaiter fitted to keep out as much muck & dust as possible? (http://www.minispare...ck to catalogue ) -try & get an original BL or Austin Rover gaiter as the later copies are very poor quality.

I have just had a very good look at my leaking gear rod seal and notice it is not leaking at the rod but at the lower position between the seal and the gearbox casing
I installed this seal after my rebuild about 4 months ago and it leaked from get go. I do remember that the seal took no effort to install so probably a slightly smaller diameter then the old one.
This box previously had two seals in (and no aluminium spacer) and never leaked a drop of oil in this area. Oh well at next oil change we will change it and in the interim continue with the drip tray.

Dear
As you mentioned I checked the seal that I purchased from Somerford mini which made by VALTIN the seal is hard from outside and flexible from inside and I have attached a multi photo for it. I think using the hard seal for the gear change may help stop leaking.

the original seal from rover you can find it from Rimmer bro.

and regarding the rubber gaiter it might help from dust but after using the gear many times it rive!

They are for a 1.000" (25.4 mm) Bore. I'm wondering if you were supplied one at 25.00 mm ?

I note the pic of the Rover seal above has 25.5 embossed on it, could 0.1mm or 4 thou inch difference have that much effect. Might put some sealant on the outside of the seal before installing.

The problem is most likely not the seal.
The way the cases are machined, the shift shaft (which is in a rotating sleeve on the inside) often has too much play, well beyond what the seal - any seal - can take up. The other issue with the cimes from pounding the Roll Pin in and out with a hammer and punch, which cam distort the case.
Mini Spares have Anti-leak kits for these. Usually they will cure the leak.
The 'Anti leak kit' consists of an aluminium bush that is fitted behind the seal. BL or Rover at some point introduced this on the A+ units as a factory fit item. they still leak LOL.
I have modified these aluminium bushes in the way it should have been done from the outset and I've never experienced any leaks from the gear change rod for a long long time.
