You got it One Carb Or Two? !!

When we set out on September 12th, 2011 to drive around Australia in 70 days, John & I expected that we might have a few issues on such a long road trip.  However, we had both ensured that our vehicles were serviced - on my test drive to New South Wales from Brisbane, I discovered that the front suspension needed adj. trumpets, adj. dampers and the best used cones we could find (no new ones immediately available), a door mirror fell off on the Great Western Hwy. and i needed a new muffler & tailpipe.

With spares in hand we set out, John lost a tire on the run north to Croydon, Qld.  No issues until my SU filter inhaled part of a swarm of bees on the Indian Ocean coast in Western Australia.  I needed two more new tires in Adelaide (2 of 6 new Falkens I started with were worn out) and a battery.  The interesting thing about the battery was that Mini Sport in Adelaide would not let me anywhere near the Mini on the hoist...and I was the one driving the dang thing around the continent...and did NOT discuss a battery replacement, just installed one...without even telling me.  You guessed it, the battery 'suitable for an antique vehicle' 260CCA.  That battery was toasted in Tasmania, again on the ship from Japan delivering the Mini to Canada and was quickly replaced with a 560 CCA battery here in British Columbia.

Back to Australia, John had a very minor wiring issue (aux. fan) on the slow run in heavy traffic to Melbourne from the Great Ocean Road.  Then on Day 68 on the run up the Gore Hwy. towards Toowoomba and the end, my-PAXP-deijE.gif?_nc_eui2=AeE2OcbnDqDl2Q2 right front wheel bearings blew out.  Re & Re'd new CV & bearings at the roadside and finished on time Day 70 in Palmview, Qld. where we started!

Before going to Tasmania 2 years later I replaced the ball bearings in the front hub with Timken tapered rollers.  However on that trip the QH u-joints started to show play.  Nonetheless, I drove around the sloppy u-joints...on disassembly, the needles were toast.  I have since replaced the temporarily installed rubber u-joints with Triumph/Austin Healey u-joints with grease nipples and extreme grease in the cups.

I’m just having a replacement box built as the one I had done previously only lasted 1200 miles before an idler bearing (supplied in a minispares rebuild kit) disintegrated.

This has unfortunately destroyed the gearbox case and transfer case.

I’ve now bought Torrington bearings from Guessworks so hoping for some better reliability. The box was an early pre A+ one so had a smaller idler bearing which is obviously a weaker point.

My advice is use the best components you can afford. A lot of the parts supplied on the cheaper end of the scale seem to be pants these days. Having also experienced a mis manufactured cam bearing in recent times also, I’m now very wary about using anything that’s not a known quality.

All I can say Mingman is "ditto".

IF the major Classic Mini suppliers wish to kill their businesses and the Classic Mini stay the course.

Cheap, failure assured products will do you and all of us in.

I am sure I write for every Classic Mini owner everywhere offer us, sell us the part that meets OEM requirements.  If it doesn't, if your supplier won't or can't supply them to you say good bye.  None of us you or us want...crap.

Hi Everyone,

A while ago another delivery from MiniSpares showed up (record time again :D ), including these

You can imagine that I was a bit disappointed since I particularly asked for the brand / quality before placing my order. Anyway, Gavin at MiniSpares offered to take the bearings back which is fair enough. unfortunately the shipping cost back to the UK would exceed the value of the bearings.

This leaves me with carrying on my search for a reseller here in Germany or placing another order with John at GuessWorks.

Cheers from the Pied Piper's Town

Hi cal844,

Thank you very much for your suggestion.

Actually the first batch of inferior needle bearings came from John at Guessworks. He offered to replace the bearings but again the shipping costs for the return delivery would be more than the value of the bearings.

My intention is not to blame any supplier for ripping me off. I know what I'm doing and while buying from outside my home country I'm always well aware that return shipping may exceed the parts value.

Next time I will place an order with John I will for sure include some of the bearings in question.

Hi Everyone,

Can someone please confirm the dimensions of the 13H9513 bearing to be 18 x 25 x 14 mm? I have finally found a reseller locally and these bearings are what holds me back from building my gearbox.

Thank you very much
