Just wondered if anyone had replaced the headlamp bullet connectors behind the grill for something more modern.

About the best thing that you can say about the present bullet connectors is that they are compact.

So has anyone replaced them and if so what with?

I've kept mine but sealed them with small diameter shrink wrap to keep the elements out,if you need to take them apart cut it off with a Stanley knife and put a new bit of wrap when you're done.

I have used the tyco econoseal connector, you can get them from online automotive suppliers and RS, I do have a crimp tool for the terminal to get a better crimp.
They are sealed aswell at the wire entry

At the risk of being derided I ran new looms from each side under the wings and connected them under the dash using relays for the lights.I will probably be soundly cursed by the next owner.Steve

Made a new harness for the front lights and eliminated the connectors altogether, now I only have connections at each headlight and the relays.

I think these are the connectors area51 is talking about. I use these aswell, for all my add-ons as they are waterproof and much easier to take apart than bullet connectors.

Make sure you get the tool to crimp the pins properly as it does a really good job of it

They are “super seal “ a bit dearer than econoseals but they are very good.
Econoseals where used from the mid 90s on minis and defenders to replace the crap mould and bullet terms

I agree with Sonscar and Stu1961. I can see nothing wrong in modifying any classic to improve a poorly designed part. Running new wires from the relays to the headlights is by far the best idea. Plus the addition of a couple of fuses wouldn't go amiss.

To help the next owner, I always use the correct wiring colour codes and create a diagram of any wiring changed to add to the cars manual. If you want to make it super neat you can use program such as TinyCad.

https://sourceforge....ojects/tinycad/

It's a bit basic but it is a free download.

The only problem I can see is where the bullets are used to connect three or four wires together .. bullets are great for that but I can't find a modern equivalent .. without splicing multiple wires into one connection which I don't really want to do.

Or do the equivalent of this into one side of a multi plug.

Solder?

Not recommended on a car as it makes wiring brittle ..

Or do the equivalent of this into one side of a multi plug.

I was thinking of something like that where it was distributing to different units but a single-post with ring terminals for something like the panel lights where it is one feed and several links from it, of which there are going to be a few ..

This would be a 4-way bullet with one input and three out .. I want one in and about 11 out! I've seen a wiring diagram with a 6-way bullet but don't think they are available now.

Attached File  bullet_4-way.jpg   13.34K   5 downloads

I also want to hide it as much as I can and keep the number of screw fittings to a minimum (loose wires?)  .. planning to have any "spaghetti" inside cabin and behind the dash out of sight so that helps ..
