OK - this subject has been covered many, many time's I'm sure however there is always an individual spin that needs advice. So here is my situation.
I am building up a spare Subframe ready for an Engine Change and need a little advice on a couple of things.
I am going to strip the paint and then do some strengthening welding, I have seen several posts on the subject so I pretty much know where / what to weld.
Welding
I'll be making triangular supports for the front Tie Bar Mounts, seam welding along any joints and maybe making triangular supports for the tower.
Painting
Once the welding is done I need to paint it. My plan is to do the front Subframe near enough the same as the rear (which I did about 5 years ago?).
Primer
Base Coat will be Epoxy Primer - on the rear I used Jotun Jotamastic 87 (A Steel Yacht Hull Primer), the problem is it only comes in 5L cans for about £70 (with the hardener). I clearly don't need 5L so am looking for alternative Epoxy Primers.
I have some Lechler Epoxy Primer left over from doing the body of my Mini, its been in the cupboard for about 4 years Does Paint go off?
Top Coat
Colour will be Old English White !! I know a crazy colour for a Subframe
When I did the rear I used an Engine Enamel, but need some advice on whether I should do this again or is there a better harder wearing top coat. I need something that is resistant to brake fluid. I had a brake fluid leak on the rear, it stripped the Top Coat off but did not touch the Jotun Epoxy Primer.
