Use a free speedo app on your phone/tablet to check real MPH. My standard underpowered (and over-wheeled) MPI used to happily get up to 80 mph at a reasonable rate so your engine spec and shorter final drive should surely have no problem nipping up to 70 and happily cruising there if it's running right?

My 1293 Mini has a 3.1 final drive and pulls well through the gears. Its fitted with an SW5 cam, twin 11/4" SU's and a Minispares "fast road" head breathing through a centre exit RC40 exhaust system. She runs on 10" wheels with 165/70 tyres.

At 70mph in 4th gear, the car will accelerate readily up to 80mph and has plenty left in reserve.....if your ears can take the din!!! With the 3.1 diff the engine is spinning at around 3600rpm. For me this fd ratio is a good balance between acceleration and motorway speed comfort. A Mini will never be quiet at 70mph, but mine is bearable for short bursts.

So your 1380 should pull aswell if not better. As others have mentioned, it sounds like it's down on power for some reason in 4th around this speed.

Cheers, Steve.

Steve, this did make me chuckle.  I have a van with standard interior & a mildly tuned 1380.  It's on 10's with a 3:1 final drive and a single box RC40.

It will go way beyond 70 but my ear drums won't!

Ha Ha, glad it made you laugh!!!

Yes, exactly the same as you. My Mini seems fairly quiet up to 60mph then all hell breaks loose.....exponentially. From 80mph I'm sure my speedo turns into a decibel meter!!!!

Cheers, Steve.

That's because it takes exponentially more power to go faster. A 3.1 final drive will outperform a 2.95 on everything apart from noise & economy unless you have well over 100hp (more probably 200) and the ambition to go as fast
