These can be helpful when locating the source.
NOTE: Great care must be taken when using on a running engine.

This is an example they can be sourced at a great variety of prices.

You can also use a piece of wood/long screwdriver (handle side ;D ) held to your ear to help locate the source of the sound.

Yup, I use the screwdriver method, preferably with a plastic handle so it transmits the noise better

These are really helpful, particularly for identifying wheel bearing rumbles, but somewhat expensive unless you can use them often::

Stethoscope arrived and wow that thing is uncomfortable!
Tapping noise sounds the same across the rocker cover, head, block, timing chain cover. Only sounds louder when placed on the mechanical fuel pump which is new.
Not sure to be honest.

To add to the mix I have problems with the car changing gear between 2nd and 3rd and getting into reverse, did some digging on here and guessworks replied to a post about a Idler bush or similar which works loose in the gearbox, I’ve tried a different gear change mechanism and made no difference at all so almost certainly an internal issue within the gearbox. It’s enough of a problem that it negatively impacts the ability to pull out at junctions and get up to speed, almost always have to double clutch between 2nd and 3rd.

I have a spare 1275 engine so may swap them out and overhaul the 998.

Hi,

just an observation, but in your video, there doesn’t appear to be much oil on the rocker shaft, springs and rockers. With the rocker cover off there should be a noticeable amount of oil “splashing around” and in the wells in the top of the cylinder head around the lower end of valve springs, there should be pooling oil.

As I said, it just an observation, but in your video it all looks a bit dry which won’t help with your problem.

Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Stevie, I would agree. Oil on dipstick is good though, central between the two lines

Timing chain cover off and investigate next? my friend who also has minis and is a mechanic believes it could be timing chain.

Really appreciate everyones opinions and ideas.
