When it is stuttering, is there a change if you apply the choke?
It seems like there is, but only for a short time (a couple of seconds) before it begins stuttering again.

Change the coil for a known working one
Hi cal, thanks for responding. What do you mean by working one? It seems to be working at least most of the time... the problem purely seems to be after a reasonable period of idle

The coil can start to break down, so instead of a 100 volt spark at the plug you get an 80 volt spark at the plug, the 20 volts make a difference and give a misfire and alot of heat
Thanks. One of the first adjustments I made was to replace the coil, going back a few months now. So this was an issue with the last coil too. Knowing this, do you think it's worth getting a brand new coil, or could the problem be elsewhere? Any chance it could have something to do with the fuel/air mix being off?

When you pull the choke it in effect richens the mixture, so was hopeful that if pulling it out when the problem occurs helped, it would point to a lean mixture.
Have you pulled and checked the plugs since changing them?
