Afternoon all,
Is there a source for the steel inserts used on some 10" alloys for the wheel nuts or do they have to be custom made? I have some compomotives which are missing some so need to replace them.
Does anyone know how they were fitted in the factory, i.e. heated rims and dropped in or are they just press fit?
Thank you

All depends on the wheels. There were some available a few years back. 30 years ago I had some made up for some Mercury wheels.
These were knurled edge press fit.

These are Compomotives. Is there any reason why some wheels have them rather than just a tapered seat on the rim?
all depends on the maker and the testing they did.

I used to get the inserts from compomotive stockists in the 80's for my 5x10 TF's.
They had splines like a wheel stud and pressed in relatively easily.

If you get an answer on this, I'd appreciate if you can pass it on. I have a set of 10" compomotives which need new inserts, but as they stopped making them a long time ago I've not had any luck

Of course no problem, mine are 10" too so should be the same. Do you have centre caps (if so do you have a photo please?) Would you need a full set of 16? If I have to get some made then will probably be cheaper in bulk!
I will try contacting Compomotive directly as well If I have no other success but have little hope given the age.
It pains me to knock one out to take to a machine shop but may be the best option, the plasticine route isn't accurate enough for my liking!

Are compomotive still about?

They are the same wheels as them it looks like, I think popping one out and taking it to a machine shop is going to be the easiest option.

I made my own centre caps, a combination of some that almost fit from Minispares and hemispherical bath bomb moulds! Bit of a bodge but look okay.
If possible I'd like 20 inserts, as I have a spare that's the same wheel - happy to split the cost of the machine shop if needed. Might be worth finding somewhere that restores alloy wheels and taking a wheel there, see if they have anything in stock that'll fit.

I've measured up one of the inserts, and most dimensions - except the inner diameter being 9.5mm, and the thickness 9mm ratner than 10 - matches these:
https://www.raceways...eel_inserts.htm
I've contacted raceways to see if they can supply any of the correct size.

That who I have been looking for. Last time it was posted though they were out of stock. Good price that.
just note the old mini nuts were radius not taper.

I noticed that about the wheel nuts, however if they can find tapered inserts at a reasonable price it'll be a lot cheaper to buy them and a new set of wheel nuts, rather than paying for a machine shop to make or adapt the inserts to take rounded ones!

Reply already from Raceways:
The old mini inserts are now deleted. The standard inserts fit fine, but you will need to use either our closed end bulge nuts or open end bulge nuts in 3/8 ths unf to compensate for the larger hole.

Raceways were one of the only links I could find that still stocked something but until I popped one out I did not have accurate measurements to go off. I found some older ones on their site which are unavailable so they may well be the ones you refer to Nick. I have 4 which need replacing, 3 are corroded and the front has gone, one is entirely missing but it doesn't look like someone has drilled through it (I hope...). For the price it makes sense to change all of them though.
Can you see the closed end 3/8 nuts listed on their site, I can only find the open ended?
Minispares list http://www.minispare...px|Back to shop which seem right otherwise (if you didnt want open)?
Smurfomatic, do you know what the original caps should look like at all? Is there any issue with the centre hole being larger in your view?
Also came across these on another forum http://www.prestigew.../Imagewi510.asp but being USA, the import costs may make this prohibitive.
Also http://www.speedshack.co.uk/index.htm but would need to call them directly to see, I imagine there is a fair chance they may have something closer to the original but it depends how much of a concern the centre size diameter is.
