Hi All,

Thank you for all the replies. The reason for asking is I'm getting a nicely rebuilt 1293 and the place I'm using to do the install and setup (they prep and race classics) have said that the bimetallic strip in the HIF when it get's old can be a bit temperamental and can lean out the mixture when you don't want it to, potentially trashing the engine as the car will be used on the track

I took a Dremel to the two opposing bi-metallic strips, cutting them off as close to the rivets on one side and as close to the right angle bend on the other, leaving the center piece (the one that attaches to the jet) intact. Works great.

If I will do this, will the center metal be strong enough?
Now I have an AFR gauge in my Mini I saw this weekend that the mixture was getting lean and by that idling very low. So I suspect this Bimetallic strip😀.

If the center piece is sturdy enough to withstand minute "flexing" by the strips, seems to me that it should be fine and has been for me for the last 5+ years.

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid that it was also a sort of thin Bimetallic material.
I will try it on your way👍
by the way it's really stupid that they designed this bimetallic jet holder instead of a fixed one. My afr started good from 14 afr, and later suddenly was idling bad and showed 17-18 afr so way to lean!

Stefan, these work fine in virtually all cases, the problem is usually the carb was not at the correct temperature when you he mixture was set at idle.

Hi AC,
I did that, and later the mixture was too rich. I have the Idea that mine is flexing to much. Maybe it's just worn and need replacing for a new one? Do you know how much the difference should be in AFR when it will be flexing?

Try setting for the mid point. If you think about it the mixture should not be perfect at idle, it will only return to that point ones the temps have returned to the point where you set it.

From SU, the full kit with new shaft, flat disc, jet and all the gaskets and rubber o rings. No play on the shaft etc. Rebuilded it with help from your video's and from TurboMini. Mini is running great with it except when it's really hot. This problem was also before the rebuild but in that time I didnt't have the AFR gauge to check this.

Just checking you used the right kit (crk162) the 167 kit will have a wider operating range when trying to hold the idle setting. What did you set the float height to?

Yes, I have the CRK162 kit. Float hight is 1 mm, used a ruler on top of the carb, and a feelerblade in between the float bowl and the ruler.

I decided today to take the carburettor out of the Mini, and modded the jet-holder. I will do some testing with it. I always can go back to the old situation by fitting a new Bimetallic jet holder.
Also checked the carb and everything looks alright there.
