Changing From 12Inch Steel Wheels To Alloys
Posted 15 November 2020 - 06:00 PM
I have a 1989 Racing Flame and I have been searching everywhere for the original spec to find out what wheels were originally on the vehicle. I believe the originals were 3.5 x 12 inch steel wheels and I’m wondering whether I will need to do anything to the arches etc to fit 12 inch deep dish rims.
I bought the car with 13 inch wheels on and they are catching on the front wing so wanted to know if changing to 12s can be done without having to do all the work involved with fitting 13s.
Cheers in advance for any help.

Any wheel size can require the arches being trimmed depending on your cars set up. You say deep dish. You will most likely have the same issues as with the 13s as the overall size is about the same.

I think Rover 4.5x12 would fit OK, anything bigger (width or diameter) is probably going to foul, especially if the suspension is lowered or has sagged over time.

Many of them on Rover Cooper 12" minilite style alloys. Not sure if this was a factory or dealer fit option?
The Rover Cooper alloys didn't exist when the first run of racing/flame/sky/rose was produced.
However the second run in 1990, of racing/flame/checkmate had them as standard.
