Should the indicators on my van (1982) be self cancelling ?

is the original steering fitted, if not it likely the pins from the steering wheel boss have fell out or dont reach the cancelling ring.

as above, the standard steering wheel boss has a 'finger' on the underside that engages with the cancelling ring on the steering column

quite possibly your aftermarket boss doesn't have this feature, otherwise it's an issue with the cancelling ring and/or switchgear

..this all assumes you don't have an earlier type steering column fitted that didn't have self-cancelling indicators

It's an original mini steering wheel, just not original to the car.
I'll whip it off and have a look.
