Those are the wise words from the folks at Maniflow, and now I know why.

After years of dealing with a rough idle, bouncing between 800-900 rpm, a recent motorway drive made things much worse. The smell of burning carbon, rattle and diesel like clatter at city speeds meant that something not obvious was wrong. Nothing was visible till the old thermal wrap was taken off the old Maniflow LCB and the crack at the joint (near where the o2 sensor goes on an injection car) became visible.

A new Maniflow unit was installed with no wrap and the now car idles like just rolled out from the factory. It's never performed better! A quick chat with the folks at Maniflow confirmed what is now obvious - exhaust wraps do more harm than good on the Classic Mini.

Yes it causes carbon embrittlement.

Is ceramic coating worthwhile?

Is ceramic coating worthwhile?

For the result and cost nope.

I was talking to a guy that does it. 20% reduction. But cost more than a manifold. You also have the problem of where does that heat go. Seen paint burn off the tunnel.

Exhaust wrap really only on a racer where power is everything and nothing else matters, and of course racers do not do high mileages...the wrap does keep the under bonnet temp down, but it also "destroys" manifolds and the extra tiny gain in HP on a road car is not worth it.. an out an out racer is of course different..where any and every HP counts... and has been said above that heat has to go somewhere, on a racer its stripped out so little if anything to go on fire / catch alight

The 100£ cost of ceramic cost isnt that much in the grand scheme of things. Proper heat management is always beneficial.
