Entirely agree with Graeme. The Lucas coils do not have a good reputation and there was a period when the failure rate was very high.
In fact, it got so bad that I went to my local accessory shop and bought a Delco standard 12 volt coil for my 1275 S and it has worked perfectly for a long time.

There a name from the past, AC Delco or Delco Remy.

With out doubt , you certainly need a good coil.
I have run on a gold Lucas coil for 10 years now without any problems. The only time I bought a non Lucas coil, I broke down on a motorway in the 2nd lane - not good !!
I do have good couple of old Lucas coils surplus
I suppose I got a good coil before all the Lucas contracts got taken overseas. As long as you pay to use the Lucas brand and pay for a licence, then your ok, you can put a turd in a box, put Lucas on it, and away you go
Quality certainly has changed, I bought 5 sets of Lucas headlamp bowl kits, and although the packaging was ok, the 6 screws which hold the retaining rims were wrapped in Malaysian newspaper ??????
Times are a changing - just a shame nothing can come out of a UK based place anymore - Lucas in Hockley Birmingham lost in time - what a shame
I suppose the only plus side is the Smiths gauges being made in Wales under licence by Caerbont - better than a kick in the cojones

jajaja! that word sounds familiar to me. Well look ... I very much agree with everything you said. It is curious that in most of the restorations that I see in "Miniworld" or "Mini magazine" the cars using Lucas coil.

I run points in my 1964 'S' rally car in order to comply with the rules. It was Peter baldwin who recommended Pertronix if I continued to have issues, but the Delphi one is still good so I have had no need. If/when it needs changing I'll go Pertronix.

If your coil is 3 ohms that's all that'll matter to your points. The coil's resistance effectively makes a voltage divider, dropping it to around 9 volts on the downstream side. Lower voltage means less potential, reducing arcing of the contacts & heat.
