Hi folks!. I want to put the original Dizzy (points) back in the Mini. I need to buy the coil and I don't know whether to buy Lucas DLB101 (Silver) or Lucas DLB105 Sport (Gold) .. both 'Non ballast resistor'. My engine is a 1275cc. Any advice.

Regards, Luis

Entirely agree with Graeme. The Lucas coils do not have a good reputation and there was a period when the failure rate was very high.

In fact, it got so bad that I went to my local accessory shop and bought a Delco standard 12 volt coil for my 1275 S and it has worked perfectly for a long time.

There a name from the past, AC Delco or Delco Remy.

Cheers for the replies, but which one to fit ?? I have also read that the Lucas coils are now made in China and don't have the quality of years ago. But which one to put then? I do not want "Intermotor", because that coil have failed to a couple a friends.

If you can find one, get a German made blue Bosch coil, as fitted to the original VW Beatle and all the air cooled cars, they are supposed to be about the best coils made, or failing that just buy a S/H original one, they very rarely fail.

Right now I have this coil with the electronic ignition. It's the Beru ZS106 (3
ohms primary). Could I fit it with the traditional Dizzy without fear is that I can burn the 'breaker points' ?

With out doubt , you certainly need a good coil.

I have run on a gold Lucas coil for 10 years now without any problems. The only time I bought a non Lucas coil, I broke down on a motorway in the 2nd lane - not good !!

I do have good couple of old Lucas coils surplus

I suppose I got a good coil before all the Lucas contracts got taken overseas. As long as you pay to use the Lucas brand and pay for a licence, then your ok, you can put a turd in a box, put Lucas on it, and away you go

Quality certainly has changed, I bought 5 sets of Lucas headlamp bowl kits, and although the packaging was ok, the 6 screws which hold the retaining rims were wrapped in Malaysian newspaper ??????

Times are a changing - just a shame nothing can come out of a UK based place anymore - Lucas in Hockley Birmingham lost in time - what a shame

I suppose the only plus side is the Smiths gauges being made in Wales under licence by Caerbont - better than a kick in the cojones

jajaja! that word sounds familiar to me. Well look ... I very much agree with everything you said. It is curious that in most of the restorations that I see in "Miniworld" or "Mini magazine" the cars using Lucas coil.

Yes Cooperman, Pertronix is a expensive and fantastic coil, but I doubt it can be placed with points. And I see that in the Forum no one is able to answer me if my Beru coil is compatible with points or it could to damage the condenser or the points.

I run points in my 1964 'S' rally car in order to comply with the rules. It was Peter baldwin who recommended Pertronix if I continued to have issues, but the Delphi one is still good so I have had no need. If/when it needs changing I'll go Pertronix.

Bosch blue epoxy filled (3 ohm) coil will outlast your grandchildren driving your car. Get the one made in Brazil, you won’t regret it. Amazon sells ‘em for about $40 US.

If your coil is 3 ohms that's all that'll matter to your points. The coil's resistance effectively makes a voltage divider, dropping it to around 9 volts on the downstream side. Lower voltage means less potential, reducing arcing of the contacts & heat.
