Hi folks.

Working on building up my twin HS2 setup.

Bought them from a garage sale, only had the 2 carbs and a bunch of gaskets and the heatshield.

Bought a revision kit, fitted it, about ready to get them back together.

What do I need? Currently I have:

-2 carbs

-SU twin carb linkage kit

-manifold (on the way still)

-new heatshield

-throttle bracket to go onto the manifold

-2 filters

What else will I need or am I missing? Have to order some more odds and ends soon and would like to get it all in one order if possible. Do I need the 5mm spacers? Anymore brackets/linkages/...

TIA

5mm spacers

Needles, I fitted gy on my 998

Are they from a mini, if not you will need 30 degree float bowl grommets orange and purple

Y piece for breathers

Springs for heat shield

Butterflies and spindles

Correct length studs for inlet manifold with 5mm spacers

I also fitted new jet assemblies and stub stacks

I rebuilt mine with new throttle shafts, floats, needle valves etc.  The only thing I did not change was the jet tubes.  I do not know whether they wear or need replacing.  They are £20 each, so left them for now.

You probably need new bushings for the spindle shaft, or at least the shaft itself needs to be renewed.

Twin carbs cost a good bit to repair and rebuild, the last set I done cost around £200 for the parts alone

The best place to get your bits and bobs is Burlen fuels, it saves on shopping and paying the different postage rates from different suppliers

There is a good bit to take into consideration with carbs and worn parts etc - for example how much extra fuel you will use just by having worn butterflies and spindles with extra air being sucked in, then adding a little more fuel on the mixture setting.

If you are going to do the job -do a good one - so much depends on it. If the carbs have a tag - ie - AUD??? - then Burlen will supply parts for that particular spec

If you don't have any tags, then they will be a bit stuck. As a guide use AUD 344, They are the same HS2 carb and rumoured to be the carbs fitted to the Coopers, then re-tagged for the 1300 MG Austins

Here is the link and good luck

I got all my gear from burden

Get it all in one go as their postage cost is quite high

I had to pay £7 postage for a £2 part the was missing from the carbs when I bought them

They had all the bits I needed and quick delivery

My carbs were from a midget so they were set up for 20 degrees

They are all set to 30 degrees now and running but I need to balance them

Have you got the Studs in the Manifold ? You'll need 1/2 nuts to go with them.

I'd suggest putting a full kit through them and I'd suggest replacing the floats as they get brittle and the old ones don't seem to be compatible long term with Ethanol. I always re-bush the bodies, but you need the right reamer that has a pilot to do the job correctly to fit them. The P/N for the full kit for twin 1-1/4" SUs is CRK101.

You'll also likely want the Cable Nipple for the Choke.

If you are considering the Braided Fuels Hoses, I'll express some caution here. I recently replaced a set that were less than a month old. When I took the braiding off I was not impressed by what I saw;-

Check out the gold plating!!

I too am fed up with the braided hoses from all the usual suppliers.  The braiding is awful and if you remove the pipe, it's a hell of a job to get it back on.  Seriously thinking about giving them up.

I use braided from McGill Motorsports here in Scotland. It's probably the same quality as Spider pictured above (it's all the same ain't it!) Here is a link to. The 1/4 inch (6mm) ID they also do 5/16'th inch (8mm)

20% off with code PICKSMALL for anyone needing any... I am in no way involved with the business, they are just a local business for motorsports components

These hoses were fitted to one of my own Minis that I'm in the process of selling, though one condition of the sale that I insisted on was that I would replace the hoses and I knew they weren't good, but was horrified when I looked at what was under the braid. The new owner wanted to keep the braided look, so I used the same hose I have been for a number of years (Gates) and was able to slip the braid and ends on, I do agree though with floormanger, not a fun job but definitely doable.

I am not a fan of braided hoses. People forget they are rubber underneath (or some rubber type compund) and the braiding just looks pretty and hides the rubber, and does offer some external pritection, but it hides the rubber from visual inspection. I use them on my racer to protect from stones / chaffing etc, but a racer does little mileage and the hoses tend to be off quite a bit compared with a road car... I wouldnt use them... brake hoses braided can give a better feel as they stop the rubber balooning to a certain extent but then you cant see the failures and cracks coming...I think the boring point I am making is braided hoses dont last any longer than non braided ones..

Howdy,

Where did you get those hose clips from?  Not seen them since I took a HS2 off a Moggy Minor in the 1980's!

This is my hard work of the latest rebuild.

Very nice work, that's actually much more to my taste.

Howdy,

Where did you get those hose clips from?  Not seen them since I took a HS2 off a Moggy Minor in the 1980's!

These plated ones were actually on this Car when I bought it some 15 or so years back, however, I do have a small bag of the original ones that have the light green paint on them. I was lucky enough to pick them up NOS as a sale a few years back. While these original clips don't look special, I find them very good when used on the right sized, non-EFI Hose.

While I gotta admit, I do so like the look of Braided Hoses, but, like you, I won't use them for the very same reasons, even on the Moke where that cops all kinds of a beating, and I can't say I've ever had an issue with stock hoses for any application.
