I recently bought a door mirror to fit onto my ‘65 Elf.  When I come to fit the  mirror I find the base is not flat and as such will not fit flush against the door.

The mirror is a “ Stainless steel evolution Bullet direct replacement Mirror Classic Mini” bought from Huddersfield Mini Spares. I would have thought the mounting face of the mirror should be flat.

Is this just a poor quality item, or is this the way it should be?

yes there is a mounting block which screws to the door, the mirror then screws to the block. BUT, this block fits within the base so is only needed if the holes in the door are at different centres. It is NOT a plinth.

I don’t think you’ll be able to see out of them on the passenger side

They look a lot like these Mini Spares GS25317 ones. They are shown with a mount and a gasket on the web catalogue:

I suspect it's missing something. Since it's sold as a direct replacement, they probably expect you to use the old mounting buts. Look at this one for reference >>> https://oldskoolmini...gam113-n-s-8e9/

yes both of “your”  mirrors look the same as what I have.  It is just the mounting flange on the one I have is not flat. I’m not sure if that is the way it is supposed to be.

I think I shall just have to return it.

Why do you think I won’t be able to see out of the passenger one?

Vision is great out of these, don’t understand the comment about not being able to see out of them.
As above the adaptor and rubber seal is used with the mirrors, doorskin isn’t perfectly straight either.

+1 to this, I've got these or similar version of these mirrors on my '91 and vision is fantastic, plus I reckon they look great. Much better than the torpedo/bullet mirrors on my Mk1 (although they're not quite fitted in the right place on the door so that won't be helping!).

Where did you mount them?

my Elf will have a chrome waistline strip which may make fitting awkward.

DUF2 i quite like the mirrors on the guards on Elf like your profile pic. I have no holes anywhere for them so deciding on a style and guard or door mounted is one of my many puzzles

I spoke to the suppliers who were not particularly helpful.

I returned the mirror asking for a full refund including the postage costs. I got a refund for the cost of the mirror but nothing for the postage either way! No communication, all I got was PayPal notification of the refund.

I have made a mental note NEVER to use that company again!

Probably be because they fit with the plastic mounting plate and rubber seal.

To be fair to Huddersfield spares, who I've always found to be quite helpful, the product description does tell you that they are a direct replacement for post 80s cars, so it's not really their fault you bought the wrong mirrors, hence no postage refund.
