Professor Pete put on his thinking trousers again. Custom float bowl:

We were noticing water in the fuel filter, this was at the same time I was getting some weird idling, sure enough, there was water in the float bowl, and of course the water pools right under where the fuel gets sucked up.  We've decided the fuel cap is to blame, it's this one: http://www.minispare...|Back to search

Definitely a case of 'form over function'!  The effing cap's going in the bin, it's a complete PITA to use anyway and the underside of it is rusted where the rain has run through.

As you'll have no doubt worked out, the float bowl has a little reservoir for the water area and a drain plug.

It then went in the anodising tank:

The anodising didn't come out quite as well as expected as you never know quite what alloy it is (and hence how it'll take) when you're dealing in scrap and offcuts.

nice fix,my TR7 suffers from water in the carbs the filler cap being flat on the rear deck but as it has HS6 your idea would be no good for me.Good solution though,Steve..

Nice fix - I guess those float bowl extenders you can buy would work too - they are absolutely pointless for what they claim to be for, but would suit this task with a drain added.

I haven't seen them or their claims Graeme, I'll have a surf.

Looks ace and great but of craftsmanship.

Brilliant !

Mate, the screws ruin it though, I mean, every time you lift the lid, I can just see a crowd around the engine bay all with mirrors :D

My thoughts too, great craftsmanship but new screws would really finish it off.

I can’t see the point - yes the ‘bowl’ will hold more fuel, but as the jet tube pick up is no longer then that extra depth is useless.

the water will sit there at the bottom. Leaving fresh petrol to be picked up by the jet tube.

You're missing the point - they're not sold for anything to do with water.

They're sold for their greater fuel volume, which is pointless if you are still drawing it from the same depth.

I mentioned them as they could be used as a water trap similar to Mini Manannán's idea - ie make them into something useful, rather than the pub bragging device they seem to be.

The extension gives a slight increase in fuel in the float chamber because it’s straight sided, not “conical” down to a point where the jet tube is like the original cover.
