Evening,

Just wondering about instant gasket stuff. Is it a good idea to use with proper gasgets to make sure you get a really good seal or not?

Also were (if you are going to use instant gasket stuff) can and can't you use it. I mean could you use it for putting a new head on?

Just wondering is all.

I have used it in the past for making a good seal, but you really need to make sure both surfaces are clean. And only put a very thin coat on the gasket (just so it helps to fill in any pits or scratches).

A friend of mine used only instant gasket on a head on a BMW 320 (old school) it worked, but only did 100+ miles before it went again.

I would not use it on a head gasket at all, but one word of warning when you do use instant gasket, when you do need to get that part off again, it is really hard because instant gasket is like supper glue.

instant gasket should'nt be needed, on any part.

only thing iv'e ever used is a light smear of grease on the fanimold gasket.

ah right. but i've read and engine build by med who used it on gasgets.

so it was a proper gasget with a smear of stuff on each side.

also honey roasted peanuts are horrible.

if the surfaces are flat and smooth and dirt free as they should be when fititng ANY gasket, sealant is not needed if bolts are torques correctly.

also, i rather like honey roast peanuts... they're a bit too honeyish though :D

it's not a terrible idea as such, it just shouldn't be needed if surfaces are prepared properly, and makes a right old mess inside the engine if you put too much on.

if you're making kwick fix gaskets outta cereal boxes fair enough, but the proper gaskets shuold squish and seal off around the whatever part you're fitting.
