Hi,

I am prepping a subframe for my salvaged from a Metro, 1310 upgrade in my 1982 HLE 1000.

I will probably be using a Metro Air Filter Housing but may opt for a cone or pancake filter at some point.

I also have and want to retain, a vacuum gauge (obviously need a different spacer than the one I am currently using.

With this in mind, to allow for the larger HIF44 carb, what should I put in place to get the extra clearance?

A mod involving repositioning the engine mounting holes in the subframe has been suggested but I can't find any info on that?

I do believe I have an adjustable top engine stabiliser, in my box of bits to fit  (the one that fits on the flywheel side of the block).

Many thanks

You'll need longer gear selector rods if you do move the holes forward. I welded a piece of metal on to the subframe, you can see the pilot holes drilled 1/2" further forward in the photos.

You can buy a thinner carb spacer with a vac takeoff from Minispares. 6mm thick for less than £10. That's what I use on both our 1275 engines. Just gives that little extra space.

Like this one.

So when fitting a HIF44 what else do you need to connect it to the Inlet Manifold?

It all depends on what year the subframe is.

Subframe - no idea picked it up from a friend who bought a front and rear and only needed the rear.

Subframe will be going in a 1982 HLE 1000

Ok then we need to find out the engine mount hole positions of yours and a known other age subframe. As if it is a later one where they have already been moved you are sorted. I would suggest measuring from the flat upper front subframe cross member back to the front edge of the front engine mount hole.

Look at the shape of the front cross member - if the centre section of it is offset forwards then it is an injection frame (assuming it’s not an auto one). If it is dead straight then it’s pre-injection.

You will 3 gaskets & the abutment plate, along with the spacer.

Can you tell from this picture?

Earlier one with the holes further towards the back.

So less space for the HIF then?

Will it work though i.e. will there be enough space) and if not, what do I need to do?

Looks like either an not moved or a moved version. The move happened before the injunction bent front bar.

The cross member changed at the same time the engine moved forward to give it the clearance needed. This happened in ‘91 for all 1275cc cars.  I always (wrongly) call them injection frames.

The only other change after that was when the MPi frame with the front mounted rad came in in ‘96

Someford show there’s only been 4 rubber mounted front subframe designs:

’original’ engine position

engine moved forward

Mpi

Automatic
