this work looks amazing well done!  I do all my designing with solidworks but I don't get into all the rendering stuff, I do know it's a lot of effort and not easy to do it so professionally though so definitely top marks there

 

I've often wondered, when you do your 3d laser scanning does it create an 'editable' file, like as a 3d model that can be modified and worked around in CAD, or is is more of  a visual thing?  like when I import an  STL it looks nice but it's just an image, I can't use any of geometry points for measurement or locking in new points/edges/faces

3D scanning generates a 3D model that is editable but usually very messy.

I couldn't tell you how they behave a CAD program like SolidWorks or Fusion, I work with polygon models in Autodesk Maya

Ah ok fair enough thanks anyway appreciate the reply

 

at one point I did get really far into a pretty comprehensive space frame design based on an old mayfair, I gutted the insides to get all the measurements, but there's always a million other dimensions you don't realise you need until you're actually trying to make the model. back and forth with various measuring tools.. being able to scan it would be a lot easier

 

current build is just a really simple strip and put back together so nothing very technical, more an exercise in learning to weld than anything else

 

but I still would like to come back to something more engineery at some point in the future
