I am tempted to use E5 and LL100 Avgas on a 50/50 basis. Avgas LL100 costs about £1.65 per litre, so not much more than Shell E5 98 RON.

checked oil today to look for signs of coolant- found signs of petrol!- Oil has gone very thin and level in sump is way above minimum . So fuel pump may now be knackered !
Unsure how a bad fuel pump leads to oil in sump? Is this a mechanical type pump fitted to the engine block or later e-pump under the fuel tank like my '88?
Fuel in oil typically results from poor combustion/combustion chamber flooding and fuel getting past the piston rings into sump.
Its a mechanical pump- i was reading somewhere that if the diagphram in these split, then fuel could get into the block and then the oil from the lever bit that is powered by the cam shaft ? is this not true ?
I'm sure theres way two much fuel in the sump to come from leaking via the piston rings - the oils almost water consistency and the level on the dip stick is about the distance from ' min to max'' on top of the max marker so about 50 % more than it should be reading

Sounds like the pump has failed. Change the oil and the pump.

i was going to get it trailered up to minisport for its engine rebuild- i dont think its worth me putting in any more effort now for the sake of a couple of weekends extra use before it goes. I'll have to go round on the cooper 'leg-works'' instead for my cooper fix ( cooper zandvoort bike !)

Exactly what happens. The fuel should stay in the top part of the pump if the diaphram is intact .. a small hole or split and the fuel leaks down into the body of the pump which is open where it bolts to the block. It simply leaks into the engine and often under slight pressure from the diaphram as it is pumping.
