Hi all,

The mini is a 1965 Austin 850.

I have a question about my heater valve and heater core.  Has anyone seen anything like this before.  All of the valves I have seen on the mini parts websites do not list this type.  The car is new to me and not sure if this is just a different part or if the handle is missing to open and close the valve.  I think it is from Australia or New Zealand per the previous owner, if that helps Identify what I need to do.  Any thoughts would be helpful.

I think I need to work on that heater hose next.  It looks really dry rotted.  I have some 5/8" hose now, so it's on the list.

Also my heater box is very strange compared to others I have seen in parts list.  It has a little white knob to open a door on the bottom to let the heat flow out.  Also there is only a switch for variable fan speed, the knob does not pull out.

Let me know if you all have any thoughts.  Thank you.

Jeremy

Valve looks like a home concocted one. Heater box looks like an early one.

Thank you for the replies.  So if my heater switch on the dash does not pull out.  Would my car have come with just an underhand lever that I would need to turn in the cold weather?

I will be replacing the heater hose, so I might as well get a working valve too.  I could not even get the thing on there to turn with a screwdriver.  So it's always running heat into the cabin.  I don't want that in the middle of the summer here.

You might try an old time heater valve that I have on my mini. It has no control from inside of the car but it takes but a second to duck under the bonnet and open it. The part number of the valve is 360-400 and the adapter 360-415 from Moss Motors.

Yes that is what I was thinking. It looks like this doesn’t exist any more.

I need to make my own from parts. I was hoping for a ball valve with easy on and off vs many turns of a knob.

Thanks for the parts tips!

I’m hoping to maybe use this.

You can get the KAD Retrosport take off stub, you'll need to change the heater hose to use that though

Here is a link to the Minispares item that should be fitted to your car, buy 2 though as I've had previous experience of these exploding (I don't know if they have changed the design)

Just a thought if you want a manual valve - and I know it's not the same as the Mini valve, but would the manual valve from a Morris Minor work?

There's a control knob on the switch panel, is there a cable for under the bonnet (hood)?

There is no cable under the bonnet. The knob I have does not pull out. It only twists like a rheostat to control the fan speed. I might have to go with the Morris minor option. But wanted a fast and easy lever. Not a lot of turns like an outside water faucet.

But wanted a fast and easy lever.

Early valves do appear for sale sometimes, even NOS occasionally.

Like this second hand one - not cheap .....

Thanks for all your suggestions.  I think I will go with what the manual valve under the hood.  So if my car was suppose to come with a heater valve that works from inside the car?  How would I turn the fan on if I have to pull the knob to open the valve?  Just asking, since I would then have to change the heater knob too.

I’ve told been told and has been my experience that part number, with the letters ‘MSC’ on the valve body, is the latest evolution of that heater valve and is reliable. I use the Morris type on my car because its unique and looks cool (so much for engineering logic!).
