Hi Guys,

My new recond mini engine over heated because of a radiator fail.  It got hot but only hit 95 Celsius for about 10 seconds before I shut it down.   When I restarted the motor it had a slight miss under acceleration.   I put in a new radiator, and inlet/exhaust manifold gasket thinking it was sucking in air making it run lean. Oh yeah I did a compression test and I am getting 185-190 psi so no head gasket problems.

I noticed when it is breaking down, if I pull the choke on it runs perfectly.

So I changed out the BBW needle to a BDK needle and my motor has never run better.  Not a miss and it seems to run cooler now that the plugs are not white which were they with the BBW.

I was originally running this BDK needle before I took my car for a rolling road and they swapped it out for the BBW saying it was too rich at the lower/mid range, the plugs were always a lot whiter than I liked though after they changed them.

My question is could I have damaged the Bimetallic strip in my new HIF44 carby when my motor over heated so that now I need a richer needle to compensate?  Can this strip be permanently damaged by excessive heat?

Thanks Brad

I very much doubt that you’d damage the temperature compensator with heat, taking into account where it is.

Check that the vacuum advance/retard plastic pipe hasn't a burn hole in it.

Very unlikely you have damage anything in the carb by getting the engine up to only 95c

Expect you'd have to boil the float chamber dry to do that. If it was down to the strip, more likely it was over compensating on the rolling road, but a sticky float valve/pivot or gummed up jet are more likely, I'd say - or they just misinterpreted where the needle lift was at.

Ok thanks Guy's,

I shouldn't be complaining because my engine is running sweet since I changed the needle from a BBW to a BDk .  I was just worried I damaged something in the new HIF44?  Not to many guys in my area run HIf44's, they run the HS4's or HS6's?

Thanks

Brad

Making up a solid replacement was a thing with turbo enthusiasts.

There's also this, but it doesn't sound like you need it & there's the bulkhead clearance thing anyway. AFR Gauge is the jobby if you really want to get in to carb tinkering.

Those HIF float extensions have got to be one of the most pointless things going!

I removed the bi-metallic strips from the temp compensator-10 minutes with a Dremel and a steady hand is all it takes. I did so to defeat the compensator changing the needle position in the jet while trying to adjust the Air/Fuel ratio. Seemed to have worked but to be honest, with the camshaft I have, getting a steady AFR reading has always been kind of a hit/miss.

But if the engine is running well and you’re happy-live well and prosper.

Have you got any pictures of this mate as I'm thinking of doing the same

Sorry, no pictures but once you have removed the compensator, you will see how easy it is.  Do a search, I seem to recall instructions w/ pictures from a fella in Australia or maybe one of those on the turbocharged forum.
