Hi,

When I start my engine, the starter motor make a horrible grinding noise.

My engine is a 1098cc A+ with a pre verto clutch. Because my old inertia starter was dead, I decided to switch to a pre engaged one. I changed the ring gear on my flywheel and took a 129T instead. That was at this point the horrible noise began. In one year all the teeth (I swear) of the ring gear were gone, the starter motor ate them all.

So I think maybe a made a mistake, and bought a new flywheel from mini spares

-> https://minispares.c...|Back to search

a pre verto flywheel with a ring gear for pre engaged starter.

Nothing change, same noise. I replaced my pre engaged starter as well and make some tests with a rover one. Less noise, but still a slight grinding noise. I don't understand why a simple thing like that can't work properly

Is it possible there is an alignement/clearance problem? I called mini spares but they advised me to come by in order to inspect my car. But I live in France   so that's not really an option.

I am open to any ideas!

From the engine number it appears to indicate your engine is an A plus  1098 cc with a 0.020" overbore, I think that is what the DD denotes.

This does not help you with your problem though, usually a grinding noise indicates worm components or a misalignment issue. As your components have been replaced I would go for the latter and as such you will need to strip out the starter motor and inspect the inertia gear and flywheel for any damage. You might have to take the "Wok" off to get a better idea of where the fault lies. It is a bit difficult to pinpoint the problem without hearing/seeing the vehicle. You can check the starter/flywheel engagement by removing the main battery cable from the starter solenoid and remotely feeding the solenoid initiate. It should be reasonably smooth and travel the full stroke without fouling on anything. You can try coating the parts with "marking blue", or if not available maybe a broad sharpie marker and crank the engine over to see what gets scraped off, then work from there.

Was just going to post that one where he identifies a poorly fitting starter engagement issue and makes a solution.

Thank you very much, I have watched the video and I really think about a misalignment. I will run a few more tests and hopefully

come back to you with results.

I had this one (a pre engaged)

That was the one that died in a year of torture. Now I have a pre used genuine rover I bought from a friend.

It does all appear matching parts.

I'd suggest taking the clutch cover off and having a good look at it all. On the solenoid, there's a short braid that disappears in to the Starter Motor. If you disconnect that from the solenoid, you then should be able to bring the Starter Pinion in without it all spinning. I'm suspicious that what ever is causing this it's the ring gear or starter motor, something else is skewif.

Hey there, I bring some news!

My mechanic controlled the space and the alignement of the starter motor with the flywheel and all was in the specs.

But then my mechanic told me that the flywheel from Mini Spares doesn't have an engagement side. Both sides of the teeth are square (I didn't know that was possible), so he had bought a pre engaged starter motor from Mini Spares that should match. I am a bit suspicious  <_< about it. I will keep you informed of the results.
