Your car from the factory would have used 20w50 oil in the dashpot

Concerning the dashpot oil, I think the best advice is to see what your engine likes by trial and error.

In my eye's the UK is full of companies with rolling roads and lots of experience on Mini's. I bet good ones can also see what oil suits your setup best.

I will get back to doing bodywork and interior and get it on the road. This year hopefully.

As said above, there is no oil that is perfect for every carb, My carb has ATF in it which is very thin. Have a look at AC Dodds Video here (layshaft weighs 1.4KG, from top to bottom it should take about 4 seconds to drop.)

Abit much that you have to take your gearbox apart to fix your carb....

Seems he could have been much more helpful to just give us a weight of the Layshaft so to save us from taking gb apart to check our carbs ;-)

 Yes I watch the viddy but he didn't state the weight. Is it in the text section? 

Anyway, we still don't know why this specific weight should be considered correct for timing the dampner speed. I would think this depends bigly on the specifics of the setup, single/dual carbs; engine displacement; needle profiles and carb type/size(s).
