Also, are you sure your ignition is ok? Good leads? Clean distributor cap on the inside? Good ignition timing settings?

If you cant check the last, army least check if the distributor is not lose and can't be turned around by hand

Im sure ignition is ok,but i will double check the obvious.
If ignition was a problem (if) - would this explain why awful when cold, but fine when warm?

Your carb dashpot would have used 20w50 engine oil from the factory. Its what I've used on all my minis and I've never had an issue.

So i should drain the dash pot of the su oil and replace with 20W50 engine oil? Do you know how many ml to put in?

You can try, I use the cap of the container your oil is in, half a cap should be sufficient

Having said that you'll struggle to measure half a cap, if it overfill don't worry about it

If the problem is that the engine bugs down on sudden full throttle then the dashpod oil would be the first suspect. Fill it until its nearly full and do a test drive. If you currently have SU oil you should notice a difference.

If there is still no difference I would think the vacume advance on the ignition may be the issue.

When you take off the dashpod to drain it, you can see the hole the needle falls into. Pull the choke and see if the brass colored pipe changed position. When you use the CO adjuster you should also see it move

Also on the top of the needle there is a 3 letter code. You can now read it with the dashpod out

To read the needle code means unscrewing the needle from the piston, it's easy just be cautious of the small spring and collar

The dashpot does not need filling, indeed this can cause the engine to smoke.Look carefully and you can see the top of the piston hollow rod. This needs filling almost to the top. This may be an inch or so below the threads.Steve.

To add a point, but not having had a mini before , I have nothing to compare it to. When the bonnet is raised and you blip the throttle from the engine bay, you can hear the air being sucked in at the K&N filter, at the same time, the engine fades away. The more throttle you give it, the more it wants to dies. Then when its had a run its ok.

Think I've more or less solved it. Adjusted the choke cable slightly and now using full choke on start up and I'm 95% happy with it. Hard press of the accelerator and it builds the revs.

Because it starts every time without any choke, I was only giving it a little bit of choke and the problem was there every time. Now with full choke, its fine.

Think I might still change the dash pot oil to the 20W50 though.

When adjusting your choke keep in mind pulling the choke cable achieves two things. The first part of the travel operates a little cam adjuster which opens the throttle blade to raise the idle, then pulling further should then pull down the jet which pools a little more fuel in the carburettor which enrichens the mixture. So you may have found it was just cracking the throttle open before which would explain the bogging from it running lean when cold.
