Being an MPi, as we've now found out, there may be other electrical gubbins that have been fried when you connected the battery wrongly. MiniSprocket could be the man needed now.
I would still be tempted to beg, steal or borrow a known good alternator frm someone and try it though, not another 'new' one.

Looked at wiring diagram.........found that the wire from main starter terminal to alternator was open circuit, I ran (bodged) a new one in with some heavy duty cable and presto we have 14v at the battery. Now i can sleep. Thanks for all your help, great site........think I will stick around.
