As a pro painter can you afford anything other than bare metal unless you are very sure of the paint history?Steve..

I've no problems painting over factory paint, but do strip back when the paint is suspect or if funds do not allow, I would use a barrier coat to prevent reactions.

 

Not much I can do with peeling paint though other than strip it all off.

The paint stripper removed the most recent coat and another beneath and that revealed another shiny silver finish beneath that so it looks to have been painted a few times with no prep between.

 

You can tell 95% of the time if the existing paint is OK to go over but if in doubt, strip it off.

The paint on this roof felt and looked fine, it also sanded nicely. It wasn't until I blew the dust away that it began peeling. There was no sign of it prior to that.

Do you bare metal the inside aswell as inside the boot and under bonnet areas.

Those areas are generally rubbish or badly painted, well mine is

As with my previous reply, if the paint is bad or flaky or poorly adhered, then it will get pretty much entirely removed.

But this is a lot of work and so costs a lot in labour so that has to be considered.

A majority of the minis I have restored have been factory paint inside (well what there is of factory paint inside a mini)

Once the factory anti drum is removed, this just leaves the factory coating there and a few exposed topcoated areas so there is pretty much zero chances of problems overcoating that. Again, barrier coat helps if required.

 

To be honest though, with most restorations, the floors require replacement so what is left inside takes no time to strip back and usually the paint is so thin that sanding lightly with the intention of just keying it up typically ends up with it mostly to the metal anyway.

Mine has hammerite black and red so that could be annoying, would shot blasting be a quicker answer for those areas Ben?

Potentially, sand blasting will be an idea. It all depends on how much there is to do because I don't do it here.

I have a guy I send them too so once transport is factored in and then his bill for the work, it can work out more expensive than stripping it by hand.

It's all a case of weighing up the pros and cons and comparing the prices.

But then again  you have to also consider how much more thorough sand blasting is...

 

Every job is different so methods used do vary.

Good points Ben, food for thought, I presumed you did in house blasting, lots of mobile shot blasters nowadays about on the mainland.

I don't have the space or inclination to take on sandblasting on that scale.

I have a large blast cabinet for smaller bits though.

Well thats all the paint off the roof

 

 

And I removed all of the sealant from the gutters

 

 

 

 

I've also stripped the back panel back to bare metal and made a good start on the interior prep

more In that tomorrow.

Its weird because parts if the car have been repainted with little or no prep hence the peeling.

This includes parts of the inside too... lower front shelf, top dash rail, floor crossmember, b posts.

 

The roof had 3 lots of silver. Each coat was shiny beneath the next.

Under the silver was just a very thin black coating/primer as seen elsewhere on the shell.

Interesting in a weird kind of way to know what has been repainted in the past, I had a feeling the roof had been done at least once as I did notice a spot that had paint missing but where you could see a layer under if anything it actually looked like a really crappy touch up job where they had blobbed the paint I don't think I took a photo of that bit to try explain what I mean.

I would say either black or red would go well. or maybe a dark grey?

Maybe even body colour.....? With black ancillaries?

At last, my lease favourite job is complete
I'll get it in the booth tomorrow ready for primer but i can't do much about applying it yet as I've had a firm in to replace all the pipework and 3 stage filtration and they didn't have everything to complete the job.

I'm waiting for them to return and finish up.
