These might be a cheaper alternative insert

I'd be a little concerned that the grooves for the drive pegs wouldn't be oil tight for a sump plug.

That's a good point.

I agonise when I do it, but the past few years, I've been fitting my own home brew 'timesert', you can see what I do here;-

I'm not a 'tight-wad' but the price of timeserts in these parts, I just can't stomach given what they are.

Helicoils here seem to give too much grief.

Regards of what method you decide to use, most need to have the thread dead square so that when the plug is done up, the back of the head of it, ends up flat against the case in order to seal.

I visited the local Wurth shop.

The 5/8" UNC kit is an amazing £300+ and the inserts are £10.80 each with an order quantity of 25!

What a bloody joke.

The helicoil type thread repair I inherited failed so a kind chap on here supplied me with a modified bolt that the standard sump plug goes into. As per my build thread. Inexpensive and so far continues to be successful.

That's out of this world. I just can't see the value in it, even at half that cost for the kit and even the inserts are a bit heavy handed.

You actually get them at a good price !  Out of interest I just looked them up now, the kit here as over $1300 AUD and there's GST on top O_O

Another alternative perhaps? Have seen one of these fitted before, drill and tap the casing to m20, being an aluminium plug less likely to pull the thread out of the casing?
