honestly don't know how to do that and don't have anything to measure electrical resistance with

Attached File  coil.jpg   144.57K   0 downloadsThis is a photo of a spare coil that came in  a box of bits with the car but again no I.D. markings.  I haven't  tried it but can you tell if its the correct type for an electronic dizzy from the attached photo?

No, you need to measure it.

Took the coil off the car and had the primary resistance checked at the local garage. It came out with a reading of 0.9 if thats any help?

Perfect that’s the correct coil. Your problem is still most likely part throttle
Fueling being too lean, fit a BCE needle and see if the problem is solved, don’t leave this needle fitted though as it’s usually too rich. When changing needles ensure you set the idle fueling correctly once you change the needle failure to do this will negate the point of the test.

Thank you so much I'll get one ordered but I'm away for a week so will get back on to it and give that a go when I get back.

do you really lose 50% of engine hp through the mini drivetrain? I always figured it was more like 20% or so for most cars (not that I'm any sort of expert of course)

.......

It's not a percentage, it's an amount.(Well it's a percentage once you know the figure)!!
Imagine a Veyron losing 200 hp(20%) between the crank and the road wheels!! Mini with completely s/cut gears about 10hp. Standard box averages 16hp

The power chart in post 7 says engine power 77hp, wheel power 38.5? That's what I was going from

Generally speaking (from what I've read in the past which seemed to be knowledgeable sources) I was led to believe about 20% losses are typical but obviously it varies there's no set amount

I was just surprised at the amount that's all

How that translates to the veyron I don't know lol firstly I don't know whether the claimed 1000hp is at the crank or the wheels and secondly there's a fair few bits of drive train to allow for and I imagine they're all pretty hefty bits of kit

Hi Stuart.

They always use the biggest number when quoting a vehicle's power. I doubt the veyron loses more than 40hp.

38.5 HP Losses on a Mini !!  O_O That's the 1st thing I'd address, or report it to NASA.

Maybe with 1" tow out, 12" wide tyres and the front brakes partly on !

OK, let me use another way. I have 2 Minis. a 105 hp 1362cc and a 51hp 1030cc.

On my dyno they both lose 16hp. So the bigger one does lose approaching 20% but the smaller one would lose only 10 hp if it was done by percentage. I wish.

The smaller one started life with 39hp. If it lost 38.5hp by the time the engine power reached the road wheels it would have had 0.5 of  a horsepower to drive it !

Its been a while but finally managed to try the BCE needle  Ac suggested. Still no better if not a bit worse on closed/trailing throttle and on overrun, with jerking and hesitation, particularly between  1500 to 2000 revs. Ive now tried BFY, BDL, BBW and BCE needles with the BDL MG Metro being the best for pulling power and overall performance. Even put a new GCL 143 coil on as the original one looked quite old but to no avail. Any more ideas out there please?

I agree, monitoring of the exhaust gas output is needed now to understand what’s going on.
