Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me spec a 1293 engine build. I have a 1293 engine with a HIF44 that has been sitting for about 20 years and I have taken the head off and it seems to already have some chamber work done and has dished pistons.

I'm restoring the shell at the moment but eventually the car will be used as a trackday/weekend b-road car.

I am aiming for around 100hp, however I do not have a huge budget as I am an apprentice lol.

From what I understand, the MED XT cam seems like a good choice for what I want, but thats about as far as I got  >_<

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You’ll have to do a lot of work to get 100 bhp. Been covered many times, probably best doing a few searches.

Go for torque.

has it had grub screws fitted?

the work looks very amateur   even for 20 years ago.

i think i was a bit ambitious with 100 hp  :shy:

How does this spec sounds?

Kent 276 or ACD RS+

standard rockers

HIF44

+0.020" A-series block (at what power is the A+ block a better bet?)

3.44 final drive, 10 inch wheels

X-pin diff

As for the head work, does the one I have currently look useable (apart from needing a skim)? Also, does the way its been ground look ok and what are the optimum valve sizes for this setup?

Sorry for so many questions!

Hard to tell if it is just crud or Allen head grubscrews.

I've got a 1293, HIF44 carb, Calver ST GT spec Head, Kent 266 cam, 1.5 forged rockers, 3.2 diff and 10"'s, which goes very well, not sure on the BHP, but as said above torque is what you want.

Have a look at the Calver ST head specs to see what valves he uses. You'll need to work out the compression ratio as well, aim for 9.75:1 to 10:1. If you're keeping a dizzy then it'll need to be re-curved to suit your engine (you can get dizzy's with multiple curve on).

How does this sound?
1293
HIF44
Calver ST Gt Spec head
ACD RS+
1.5 forged rockers
Calver ST GT Spec dizzy
Cross pin 3.2 FD diff
AE Hepolite 8cc dish +20 pistons

And then am i right in think that calver ST would modify the head to get to the desired CR?

Yes, a lot of work and money needed to get to that stage. My 1293 was 98 on PBs rolling Road and 83 on Neil Slarks.

I didn't build that one but it it was Brett Simms head and twin 1.5s, well put together by the previous owner

Just about to get my current 1293 on the rollers, this has MED pistons, MED flywheel, innocenti rods, Car Kitchen head, all balanced and twin period H4s.

Hoping for about 80.

That sounds good, You would get away with standard rockers if you wanted to keep costs down and if your current dizzy is good AC Dodd can re-profile that to suit his cam and your compression ratio. I think they're the same pistons that I have, Or these are supposed to be good as well https://www.minispares.com/product . 3.4 diff will be better suited for B roads and trackdays, I find the 3.2 good for B roads and long drives.

Yep Calver will modify the head to get the CR you want.

You might want ARP head studs as well, expensive but they won't snap like a lot of others seem to be doing lately when being torqued down.
