Hey!

So, tried searching the forum for answers.I did not quite understand it all so here it goes:

Specs:

Standard Metro 1275 engine, hiff44 carb, BDL needle.Lucas 65d dizzy with a 143 coil. Set the timing to 8 BTDC at 950rpm and then adjusted at 4000rpm to 32degrees. (Vac disconnected).

I have been struggling with the mixture, but after changing to the BDL needle its been much better and i therefor moved on to the ignition system.

The problem is that i am struggling to get the car to perform properly, in 4th gear it seems to flat out at around 4000rpm.

My understanding after reading here is that this is a more suitable coil: https://simonbbc.com...0-DLB102-SILVER ?

But, do i need the ballast resistor or not?

Also, in terms of wiring. I now have the two wires from the electric module on the dizzy to the coil. And a wire that gives 12v when the ignition is on. Will the same setup work with the new coil and will changing the coil maybe fix my problem?

Regards

PK

Use NO ballast resistor with the 65d dizzy.

You likely need a proper tune up to get the engine to run cleanly.

I have a similar setup but 1380, 65D, Hiff44 with BDK and std spring. My problems went away when I ditched the conical K&N and added the HIF44 elbow with a standard filter box from a late model HIF38 carb mini, I modified the filter box removing the flapper assembly, sealed off the bottom opening and removed the internal plastic to improve airflow where the flapper was positioned, then added the correct K&N filter. It also removes the induction roar. I found the BDK better than the BDL

Does that mean you were left with only the small bore horizontal  tube at the top of the air filter  for air intake?

In the video, I thought I heard AC say that the 0.8 coil was correct for use with the 65D dizzy, but I seem to recall an earlier post on this forum where his recommendation was the Vioer 1.5 ohm coil for the non ballast 65D. Or does the application depend on engine modification, etc.?

In theory the 0.8 ohm coil is correct for the 65D but I've seen a post on here recently by A C Dodd saying that the modern coils are rubbish and to use 1.5 ohm coil instead but still with no ballast resistance in the circuit.  (advice which I have taken)

Just to clear this one up the right coil resistance is 0.8ohm. I have had failures using both 1.5 and 0.8ohm coils and failures with coils too. The most powerful spark will be using a 0.8ohm coil. If you run the 1.5 ohm coil reduce the plug gaps to 0.028” this will reduce the load on the coil insulation and ensure a sensible service life.

No ballast is used with the 65d dizzy

ACDodd, what curve (0123456789 A B C D E F) do you think is the right one for an Austin Mini 1275 (now 1293cc) from 1972,twin carb and big cylinder head valves. Final drive very very short.
123Ignition (with vacuum tube).

Cheers in advance!

Cheers. I checked that video out, as well as other sin the series, and saw no example of the modified air box, I.E. removing the flapper assembly, sealed off the bottom opening.
