Hi, 

 

I'm replacing the toe board on my 1984 mini and once restored, I'm considering fitting solid subframe mounts. I'm aware that, to do this, I need to add some additional strengthening to the toe board subframe mounting area, however can't find anything definitive, as to what this reinforcement should look like. 

 

The Heritage panel I'm fitting already has a 'reinforcement' parch around this area - I'm assuming this isn't sufficient?

 

If not, I've got some questions :

 

how big does the reinforcement panel need to be?

what thickness - 0.9mm?

is is located on the toe board only, or should it bridge floor panel?

Do you add this on the inside or enginebay side of the panel?

When watching the video bear in mind this is a fully caged race car.I have a hazy recollection that in a frontal impact the engine and subframe would pivot around the top mounts pushing the floor upwards and moving the steering wheel away from your face.Of course we are not going to have an accident but it is something to consider

A plate 6inch square centered over the mount holes and bent under the floor flange plug and seamed to the bulkhead would probabli suffice,Steve...

Personally I would use 1.2mm steel sheet, seam and plug welded in place. Shouldn't need to bridge across both sides.

6” x 6” should suffice. Don’t seam weld all at once either, inch miss an inch etc and minimise any heat build up as much as possible.

Definitely bend the strengthening piece such that it overlaps from toe-board to floor and is welded to both.

 

Solid subframe mounts would be SO much better if they were designed to lap under the floor and have an additional bolt - you wouldn't need additional strengthening then.

yep like the original subframes did pre 76

I bought the Urchfab toe board strengthener for mine, its well made and not as big/heavy as it seems.

 

Im yet to fit it, only because I havent gotten around to it yet, but I will be fitting it. Mine is fully caged so is stiffer tahn normal Mini's will be, and it is going to be a road car.
