We do do something similar on the Mokes though the coil over spring is only very light (50 lb/in), though I moved on from that to Air long ago. We do this to give them more load carrying capacity, but this,,,,,,

This just shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what they need to achieve, some people should cut their tools in half so they fit in the bin better.

I add here too, when I was running the coil overs, although only 'lightly' sprung, when empty, the ride was horrible, really really horrible, part of the reason I went to air.

The underseal looks good, so a rotting body shell is unlikely to be the cause of the crash.
