i just replaced my leaky heater valve and discovered my cable is bad as well. how do i take apart from the dash? before i burned my haynes i remember reading i had to drop the heater down to get behind the dash but this seemed a bit extreme. is there an easier way?

Nope.

Two crossheads to lower the heater, no need to dislocate from rear pegs, although sometimes it can make the job easier.

Then there are two little 5/16" nuts up and behind holding the switch panel on. Remove then the panel comes forward.

Unscrew retaining nut from cable at back of switch panel and the rest is obvious.

The fun part is getting the little nuts back on.

as the man says above!! totally simple operation!! 2 screws and the front of the heater drops!! to help access u mite need to remove a couple of the switched to help you!!

cheers mates, sounds like it would be a good idea to go ahead and change the choke cable while i have it apart.

I've always wondered just how do you feed it back through the bulkhead? With a bit of string?

As you can see this is a job i've never attempted myself. Yet!

Nope. Just push it through the hole and then pull it into the engine bay.

Hardest part is getting the 2 bolts which hold the switch facia back on.

Agreed I bought my mini with one side missing (choke side) so the bolt that protrudes on the z peice ripped through the dash oneday and now theres a nice split in it. Eventually found the nut in the boot and then spent about 2 hours trying to get the bolt through the ruddy hole.

Have fun. I have to do mine today as the choke cable decided it didn't like the carberettor...again >.<

Well nobody uses the heater cable anyway, you could fit two choke cables to your panel, and just swap them over at the carb end when one breaks, means taking the dash apart half as often... )

If it's just the inner cable that’s snapped, you don’t need to replace all of it, as you can get a way with only replacing the broken bit, well I have been (got through 6 choke cables this year> )

No what happened was that it managed to slip out of the bolt without breaking, but I yanked it a bit hard and how its hanging out.

i've never had a mini heater that blew cold!! just didnt use the blower in the summer, slid the selector to "off" and opened my window!! tyhe extra circulation cant really hurt can it!

When u get a heater cable, does it come with the hole lot, like the fixing bit in the engine bay. as mines break off somewhere. could always get a fan for the summer
