Hi folks,

I’ve just acquired this engine but having looked up the number I can’t seem to find any info on it, does anyone have any ideas what it might be from?

99H213A-H2511

It has D-top standard size pistons and a 12g295 head, the head has non standard rockers, does anyone know what they are?

Many thanks in advance for your help!!!

More pics of the engine as a whole.

I think the engine was originally a 998 unit with the Lucas C40 dynamo fitted to a centre change all speed syncro gearbox. Probably circa 1969 and also probably fitted to a van or pick up or a standard 998. Generally the 12G295 head was fitted to the 998 cooper and 1100 MG engines.

It was out of a late 60’s mk2 but no idea if it was the original engine, the guy said it had had an alternator conversion but had very little info, it has a 22G1128 remote gearbox on it...

plus oil cooler and not a mini rad, a but bigger by the looks of it...

The bores have slight wear at the tops, not great but you can feel slight ridges, is this rebore territory or will I get away with it?!

The use of "D" top pistons on a 998cc negates the need to skim a 12G965 cylinder, a nominal 2.75" as standard, still maintaining a usable compression ratio.

Looks like a 998 Cooper engine and gearbox. The D-top pistons are the giveaway.

Unfortunately, if a re-bore is necessary, the D-tops are NLA so you will end up with flat-tops which will mean the head will need to be skimmed.

The rockers are Cooper 'S' type and the original dynamo has been replaced with an alternator.

That jas the basis to be a nice engine.

Thanks Cooperman, I still don’t understand the engine number, it doesn’t seem to in the guessworks list..?
The 12g295 head has been skimmed to 2.69inch or 68.3mm too, going to get the cam out now to check what it is.

Re the engine number. The Guessworks decoder does not include all the variants that use the A series and does not include the engine numbers for non UK. built engines. Hence the request for more pictures. It does not look like it has come from a variant and the car does look like a UK built one. But the number is included in a list I have but just as a 998 1970 on…..

Ah ok Nicklouse, so it might be a standard block with Cooper pistons?

I have just removed the cam, no markings on it but one raised ridge at the back of the engine, does anyone know what it might be from? Is it just the original cam perhaps?

Nope. It might be the engine number that was fitted to the car.

and nothing to do with what the engine actually is. The scrivits don’t look original.

So:

99 - 998cc

H - transverse engine

213 - means codes Ub (Lucas C40 Dynamo) and We (Centre change all synchromesh)

A - no additional features

H - high compression

I can't say what car it came out of, but might give you an idea. The 4 synchro gearbox was introduced in late 1968 & the centre gear change would suggest a base model saloon or commercial.
